Rusti Hampshire
Rusti Hampshire is fast becoming the south coast’s premier fencing solution. The Abshot-based company offers the ultimate in futureproof fencing and landscaping with their woven steel fencing, steel edging and retaining walls.
Taking over from timber, woven steel fencing is the perfect antidote to Britain’s changing climate and harsher elements; blending strength and longevity with architectural style. No more warped wood or fence posts made unstable in the wind and sun, no rotting or annual maintenance — steel is the weatherproof fencing solution the south coast needs.
How does Rusti woven steel fencing work?
Every job is entirely bespoke, according to each client’s requirements. While a typical boundary fence is 2m, Rusti’s woven steel boundary fencing can be constructed to heights of up to 3m, or as low as 30cm, depending on the needs of the outdoor space and its surroundings. Unlike timber panelled fencing, woven steel can be curved or made circular; undulating or follow the contours of an incline — with such strength that our retaining walls are engineer-approved, too.
Supporting posts are driven by hand into the ground every 600m, instead of the 1.8m more typical of timber fencing, with no need for concrete. Then, 3mm flat bars are woven around each post to clamp the structure even more robustly in place so the fence sits as strong as the steel of which it is made. Small gaps in the weave allow it to breathe: wind passes through it without threatening the structure and plants can climb up it easily without the need for a trellis.
The rusting process
This is where the Rusti magic comes in. The mild steel used by our team is shimmering black on day one, but over time the steel rusts naturally to form a protective orange patina that glows with the changing light and seasons. While timber fencing needs annual maintenance, woven steel fencing just improves over time with every day that passes. The rusting process takes up to around a year to complete, but that depends on location — in coastal properties, the fence will rust faster than inland. The team can also accelerate this rusting process if the client so desires.
The story behind Rusti, Hampshire’s finest fencing company
Between them, founders Oli Lambert and Brodie Biddle have more than 30 years’ experience combined in construction, garden design and landscaping. The pair began working together in 2020 and realised they had both become frustrated with the inability of traditional timber fencing and edging solutions to cope with the ever stronger winds, torrential rain, droughts and high temperatures of today’s changing seasons — particularly along Hampshire’s coastline.
After careful research the pair founded Rusti, discovering woven steel fencing and edging provide the perfect combination of longevity, strength, craftmanship and elegant design. Rusti is now fast becoming Hampshire and the south coast’s finest fencing contractor, installing their woven steel across the county from Chichester to Beaulieu and from Alresford to Ringwood — and beyond.
“Woven steel is zero maintenance, way more cost-effective than building a wall or replacing timber fencing and the results are architecturally striking,” says Oli, who studied sculpture before running a successful London design-and-build company for 20 years.
“We have quickly discovered the possibilities with this product are endless — from curved boundaries and angled installations to retaining walls, pond surrounds and raised beds — it’s so exciting to us to have found such a long-lasting solution. In fact, we are so confident in the strength of our woven steel fencing we offer a 25-year guarantee.”
Brodie, who escaped a career in account management to work in landscaping and garden design, adds: “Welding is incredibly sensitive — watching molten metal bond to mild steel is an art form. The most exciting thing is that Rusti’s woven steel blends in everywhere and looks amazing in every situation — whether that’s a high boundary fence beside the coast, sleek rounded retaining walls beside a modern swimming pool in an urban setting or as vegetable planters in the depths of the Hampshire countryside. It just works.”
