Roger Smith

I gained a Distinction on a 2 year Dipolma course in Garden Design from Brinsbury agricultural & Horticulture college in 1998. I then started working for Millstone Landscapes (Chichester) that same year as there in house designer & estimator. During my 3 years there I designed an array of small gardens and also designed an oriental style garden in Kingswood Surrey that went on to win the Best Newcomer award at the BALI awards in 2001. I joined Frost Landscapes in Milton Keynes late in 2001 as a dedicated Garden designer. Again designing mainly urban gardens and larger schemes which also won several more BALI awards.

I relocated to Sussex in 2004 while continuing to work on a consultancy/freelance basis for Frosts and a company called Scenic Blue.

I was co designer for Scenic Blues Chelsea courtyard garden (Gold Medal) together with Mandy Buckland in 2006 and went on to be lead design for the main avenue show garden at Chelsea for sponsor Marshalls in 2007 (Silver medal). I also design and won a Silver Gilt medal at Hampton court in 2012 for a small garden as part of the 4, APL gardens that year.

In 2010 I set up a new business with a former nursery manager supplying plants to landscapers called Quercus which in 2017 became Quercus Nursery.

I now concentrate on design once again with my current design business partner Chris Mennie under the business practice name of Quercus Landscape & Garden Design where we design a wide range of gardens and often collaborate with profession architecture practices and developers, We recently won the best garden in 2021 APL awards for gardens in the 150-250K category for a coastal garden we designed and was built by a local landscaping company.
